A memorable Xmas

Merry Christmas

It was an enjoyable and memorable Xmas of Dec-2012. An evening filled with activities like prayer, outing, entertainment and eating. With whom? None other than my affectionate friend and companion, Siva. He appeared at his best in good colours.

A visit to the Santhome Basilica to offer prayer and light candles gave fullness to my soul. Of course, it was the first visit to Santhome church in the lifetime for me and him. Had it been for midnight mass, it wouldn't have been possible to register our foot fall. I was craving to shoot before sunset from different angles of the church.

A drive along the service lane on the Marina was cool with a festive atmosphere that engulfed the air. The drive made me recall the history of the erstwhile colonial Madras starting from Thousand lights, VTI, Blackie & Sons, Spencer, Banquet Hall, Thomas Manro, War Memorial, Napier Iron Bridge, University, Ice House and Santhome. Siva, a vivid listener, sharpened ears to hear me in spite of the suppressing wind.

Vroom... off the road we disappeared into the darkness decorated with the dotted lights on the arterial road of Chennai. Express Avenue tempted us to drop in which we graciously scheduled for Newyear Eve.

Indo-US Relations

When I cleaned my mailbox, I came across an entry I sent for design contest in 2009.
Theme: Indo-US Relation

Description
The building (American centre) resembles a match box. India flag as Box label and stars in US flag as side frictional dots. The match stick heads are windows on the topmost floors and on the roof is the centennial flame. Both nations can work together to shine up in all fronts.

I participated and didn't bag a prize.

Entey Malayalam

This is the image of Goddess Meenkulathi Bhagavathy at Pallasana, Palaghat/ Kerala. It is the other version of Goddess Meenakshi. Here at uchchikalam, the priest bursts crackers (vedi) as part of puja / pariharam. The Ambalam is spaciously vast and sure will give satisfaction.

We visited the temple in Mar-2010 to offer prayer and vedi (pariharam). Till then I did not know Malayalam even a bit but within two days after coming home  I wrote all slokas in Malayalam. It appears Amman had unearthed my poorvajanma vasana and made me to brush up my native language that I knew in earlier birth in Chera naadu. Now I have lost interest in reading or writing the language. I have attached the scanned copy of the language that I wrote without a mastery. Perhaps mistakes in akshara shabdham could be there which I might have not known. Glory to the Goddess!

Swabhimaan

A special bud

Of all the five senses, no two are unique and identical. Every organ has its own role to play and cannot be disregarded for a matter of speciality or unimportance. Mind is the best creative aspect that a human can have. Manas is activated by all the sensory organs of the body through mind-body relation. Biologically speaking manas is the brain.

Swabhimaan is a Trust, working for the welfare of people with autism in India. It is located on the outskirts of Chennai. This Trust is a five-year old dream of Indian medical doctors and parents of special children. You may be aware that few organisations have been founded exclusively for special children with the disorder.

At Swabhimaan, the Indian system of medicine for the development of children is practised. Often, special care is needed to treat children with autism for they are special buds. This is a pilot project where for the first time Indian medicine is made use of in the treatment. Parents are often amazed to find that their children are capable of learning a sport fairly comprehensively.

Before going into the details about Swabhimaan, let’s have a look at the definition of Autism and what causes this syndrome. The occurrence of autism is found at a rate of approximately 1 in 500 of the population. At India’s current population, this means that there are 1.7 million autistic persons in the country. The majority of autistic people in India has not been diagnosed and do not receive the services they need. Parents are unaware of Autism and what causes this behavioural disorder.

You should not think why a heavy topic is discussed here in a Travel magazine of Chennai. This is a topic that has to be discussed so as to create awareness in you.

Sometimes, you or your family members could have been afflicted and left undiagnosed without knowing about it.

Autism is a condition that affects some children from either birth or infancy and leaves them unable to make out normal relationships or to develop normal communication. It is found that this is prevalent in boys than girls and is beyond race, geography and status. If untreated in childhood, it may lead to severe complications at adulthood. They exhibit repeated body movements and show an unusual response to people and usually resist changes to routine life.

Strictly speaking, Autism should not be mistaken as mental illness. It can be rightly related to a spectrum disorder wherein the symptoms and characteristics can put forward several combinational symptoms. No two autism affected children will behave in a similar way. Some babies react to external sound and respond to it after 3 – 5 months of birth. This is generally taken as the yardstick for a normal growth. These children have a disturbed mind-body relationship where the natural rhythm does not remain in harmony. Of course, music is a substitute to induce waves that would rejuvenate the 'self and body' togetherness.

A parent may take their child to a paediatrician only to be reassured that their child is just "slow." Unsatisfied with the treatment, they may visit a psychologist, only to be told their child is "mentally subnormal." Convinced that their child does not fit the typical picture of mental retardation, they may visit a psychiatrist, to be told that their child has attention deficit disorder, and must be put on medication. After months this will also go futile and the next search starts. Ultimately the bulls-eye was not hit. These lines are repetitive in the journal for special disorders.

Dr.Bernard Rimland, a Californian psychologist and founder of Autism Society of America rightly classifies it into neurological dysfunctions like dyslexia and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

There are so many theories about what causes autism. On the outset, it is important to stress that no clear-cut answer exists on the question of cause. The practical causes noted under observation were poor parenting, toxicity dosages during pre-natal period, genetic inheritance, a complication in pregnancy and child birth. Rubella virus and Herpes encephalitis virus are found to attack the brain of the child.

Today Environmental toxicity is regarded as a major triggering cause of autism. Environmental pollution like intensive usage of artificial pesticides and manures, water contamination, air pollution, sound pollution, leaded petrol, vaccines, amalgams, improper solid and liquid waste management and increased exposure to electromagnetic forces are some agents.

At Swabhimaan, the care and attention have been much above the level of general care. The doctors who teach yoga will also play football with the children. There is always a totally holistic approach and major problems are addressed with care. During the course of treatment, parents too equally involve themselves and play their role well. The school is called as Bodhi Vruksham where verbal behaviour analysis is being implemented.

Swabhimaan, headed by Dr.Partheeban, helps to shape these special children with disorder into responsible citizens. The future plans are to train naturopathy, Ayurvedic and Siddha doctors into this, involve special educators who can inculcate yoga workshops, run a specialized pharmacy and open a multi-care holistic centre with ultra modern facilities.

Some of these children have improved their social relationship and behavioural patterns. After treatment, they have higher awareness and lower anxiety levels. This has helped them to enrol in regular schools. Some children are un-doubtfully very normal until a close observation is done. After the treatment here, they are near normal and ready to face the society independently. He invited us to come again in the morning so that he could take us around an another unit that runs vocational courses in weaving, paper cup manufacturing and special bakery products. He also underlined that milk-product is a strict ‘no’ for special children as it would delay their digestion and metabolic rate.

Dr. P.K.Partheeban
Swabhimaan is managed by a team of dedicated doctors comprising: Dr.P.K.Partheeban, Dr.Karthikeyan, Dr.Dhilip, Dr.Jayshreee and Dr.Kumaresan. The special educators need a special mention for their patience and motherly affection. Our sincere wishes to Dr.Partheeban's team for the special service they do which is unnoticed by many.  Contribution to this trust is exempted in Income Tax u/s 80G. I was moved by his humble gesture of receiving and sending us off at the gate with love.

Every one of us would normally spend few thousands for cinema, hotel, travel, holidaying, on wasteful purchases and shopping. Every year, why can't we set apart a portion from this for Autism cause? After reading this article you would have gained an insight and awareness about autism, didn't you? This is not a hospital or asylum. This is a special care centre.

Let us wait patiently for this special bud to fully blossom into a beautiful flower. Swabhiman will take care in nurturing the saplings in their nursery and make it grow into a vruksham.

At a distance through years

There is a person whom I have to mention here. He is Mr. Selva Ganesh, a quiet and soft natured human who joined my earlier company after I left. During 2010-12 he interacted with me over phone /email to get his doubts clarified in the HR domain and was very eager to meet me. It was as if I were his boss guiding in-absentia. He often said that he had learnt a lot from my files and system left behind by me. Selva always signed mails to me with ‘Your obedient student’. I initially thought he was little emotional that made him visualise a larger than real picture of mine in his mind. Later I understood that I was wrong when I was moved by his true gesture.
Our meeting never happened in the past until we met for the first time yesterday when he personally invited me to his brother's wedding. He spoke at length with awe, spent more time discussing many topics at restaurant. Always had words of thanks for me that with the acquired knowledge he was selected at Alstom Ltd and was recently appraised with a good hike. I visually noticed him enjoying every moment of his stay with me and I enjoyed his impressive guffaw. He loves pet animals; has an alsatian, a kombai and a tailless breed at his sprawling house.

An open letter from Dr.APJ

Dear Citizens,

Why is the media here so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?

We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?

We are the first in milk production.

We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.

We are the second largest producer of wheat.

We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit.. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.

Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is.. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . For her, you and I will have to build this developed India . You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

YOU say that our government is inefficient.

YOU say that our laws are too old.

YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.

YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.

YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.

YOU say, say and say.. What do YOU do about it?

Take a person on his way to Singapore . Give him a name - 'YOURS'. Give him a face - 'YOURS'. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are.. You pay $5 (approx. Rs.. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity… In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai .. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah.

YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs..650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.'YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand ..

Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo ? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston ??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India ?

In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan ..

Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.

We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity.

This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.

When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?

What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too….. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..

'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'

Lets do what India needs from us.

Thank you,

Dr. Abdul Kalam

Mambalam, the name and origin

THE HINDU                Chennai Edition          March 25, 2012

Madras Miscellany

When the postman knocked…

Vilvam tree
 *Mambalam continues to intrigue readers.
S. Chandrasekar says that Mambalam was till comparatively recently populated more with Vilva trees (Aegle mermelos) than with people and, so, was called Maha-v/bilvam which became Mav/bilam and finally Mambalam. I have toured the whole area, he says, and found numerous Vilva trees still surviving in house compounds for religious reasons. He adds, “Usually the appearance of Vilva trees in a city is a rare occurrence and to have so many in one area would have been reason enough for the area's name to evolve from it.” Going by the geographical fauna and flora, the nomeclature sounds good and acceptable.

Chandrasekar goes on to add that in the Thevaram there's mention of Mylapore and ‘Theyn-amar-solai' (a garden with nectar-filled flowers). The latter is likely to have got transformed as Teynampet, just as ‘Nandavanam' became Nandanam, he posits. Shiva shrines in/around Chennai has mention in Thevaram.

On Mylapore it says 'Malgun Mathri Thavazhum Maada Veedhi Mylappil Ullar'

vAn sottac cotta ~nindRu attum vaLar madhiyOdu ayalE,
thEn sottac cotta ~nindRu attum thiruk kondRai senni vaiththIr;
mAn pettai ~nOkki maNALIr; maNi ~nIr mizhalai uLIr;
~nAn satta ummai maRakkinum ennaik kuRikkoLminE

No doubt there could be many similar explanations for different localities in Madras, but this column generally prefers more solid evidence before accepting such theories. Let's wait and see for anyother explanation.

வந்தமர் மாலை சாற்றும் அரவுக்கோன்;
கலிமுழுதும் சிவ நாக பூசை நடந்தால்;
தழைத்தோங்க போகங்கள் வரப்பெற்று;

Sai of Shirdi

The oneness of trinity

See, see, the holy saint of Shirdi looks at you
With much of love and sympathy in eyes;
The posture with divinity makes him a yogiraja
He who lived and lives through years of yuga;

He is Rajadhiraja, the king of kings in this world,
Rules the universe which has no adhi and antham;
He is simply elegant and godly yet a human avatar,
The one in whom the trinity gods dwell as Datta;
His stature is normal but a brahmanda nayaka,
Went for alms as fakir but a maharaj in blessing;
With power to bestow riches and wisdom
On the deserving soul, he decides to elevate;

Was called Sai who has mastered sat-chit-ananda
A satguru with no birth name but a teacher to gurus;
Udi from ever glowing fire Dhuni burns our sins,
Protects from haunting deeds of past and present;

He is there in the quenching cool air, smell of earth,
Taste of water, warmth of fire and pranav of veda;
Prayers and glory to Baba, the Sai of Shirdi,
Who is ubiquitous and lives in forms of nature.
