Full Part Woman

Invariably in all language dailies in the last few weeks, I came across the hot news about Tamil novelist Mr.Perumal Murugan. Though a link to download a free copy as eBook was available, I did not have the patience to sit and read in front of the laptop as it was unconventional to me. Being a book lover, I allot time every day to read books leisurely once the daily household works are over. A passion for book reading should not end up in a backache or irritation on eyes, you see.

Image result
It is said the story line of Mathorubagan (One part woman) originates at a local temple festival where a third party indulgence is allowed for fertility among the unsuccessful couples. Quite lately many from the voiced community staged a demonstration and attracted the media to ban the title and warn the writer as well. Another faction of revolutionists voiced support to boost the trend of projecting progressive issues to the limelight. One part woman or full part woman, what does it matter when it becomes hot news? Of course, a delicate issue that had to be dealt with care. The push-pull effect on the professor-writer has led him to declare that the writer in him is dead and opted for a voluntary transfer to Chennai. So what if the writer moves out of homeland? This smoke billows till a next controversy erupts in the publishing world. The protest against a sensitive topic will not fall silent even after the writer or publisher withdraws the copies to pulverise. Is it a boon or bane for publicity? Feminism and male chauvinism are always under debate.

Since the age known, it is argued that such controversies have never died. Citing examples from the Mahabarath and Ramayana, it has been continuous till date to either support or to oppose fidelity. Whatever be the issue, the final object of ridicule is not one part woman but a full part woman. Depicted as an eyesore, she bears the grudge of the society and community. Any subject is a good subject, subject to approval by the reading society and as long as it is not subjective. A writer’s conscience is the first reader and honest critic.

Biologically speaking about the XX -XY chromosomal theory on patterns of DNA, it could be true that every woman is one part man and every man is one part woman. When it comes to bearing shame, it is women; and bearing pride, it is men. As a book worm and ardent fan of many legendary senior writers like Kalki, Lakshmi, Deepam Parthasarathy, Kuvempu, Masthi Venkatesha Iyengar, Rajam Krishnan et al., I observed they handled socially sensitive topics with utmost care and took ethical accountability of message delivery with maturity.

Came some prominent players like Jeyakaanthan, U.R.Ananthamurthy, Sujatha, Sivasankari, whose writings stirred controversy at some time or other for socio-cultural reasons. At the same time, devaluing the status of a writer is something not unusual. Self-exile or forced expel from the arena of writing is unhealthy. When I met some members of publishing houses, they told that anything can be written and released either by the writer or for a lump sum royalty from book houses.

Be a literary work by a physically full part man or woman, the protest should subdue. When the print medium is converted into a visual medium, the impact and protest widen on a larger canvas. Here comes my voice of empathy as poetry for those portrayals without resistance.

“In the limelight of social ethos
Travels my lead character in dark;
Oh, she goes solitary sans security
To travel only in shame and fame;
Looking timid and feared of rude
The jewels of pride cast in nude.
Much delighted progressive writers
Cheer up the beacon of sensitivity
Spare the woman and her deity,
We have not come of age for gaiety.

Staring at the horizon, let’s stand up to find a healthy trend in writing and reading, for books are the windows to the world. Many book fairs may come and go but the dignity of writing should not be let down. My dear fellow writers in full or one part, hats off to your skills but please read the pulse of society before wielding the pen.

GARUDA PURANA

Kanchipuram tour

We went for a one day tour to Kanchipuram on Friday, Nov 21.

Mango tree, Ekambareswarar temple: Parvathi worshiped Lord Shiva under this tree. The tree, said to be more than 3500 year old, lost its trunk/roots a few years ago. The Horticulture department salvaged plant cells for culture growth and restored a new sapling which is now a big tree. Of the panchbootha sthalas, Earth is Kanchi with Sakthi's presence and Tiruvaarur with Siva's presence. Eka-Amram means single mango tree.

Kamakshi temple: We performed abishekam to the goddess around 10.30am. Adisankarar installed a Meru chakram in front of the goddess in 7AD. Darshan was a divine beauty in fullness! The temple is under renovation.

Varadarajar temple: A massive temple with intricate sculptures. Enjoyed puliyodhari and pongal. The temple record says that Sir Thomas Munro fulfilled his vow by donating huge silver vessels (Munro gangaalm) and gold ornaments to the lord. Perhaps, a pious saint among the British governors of Madras.

Ulagalandha perumal temple: Very huge moorthy with hands and legs spread across to measure the universe. Marvelous!

Kumarakotam: Murugan temple where various saints from Arunagiri, pamban swamigal and others composed and sang hymns on the lord.

Orirukkai: 6 kms from temple town. Mani mandapam for Mahaperiyavar is under construction. Many young students of the Vedha patasalas were learning under big trees in traditional atmosphere and dress code. Very nice to see such things of cultural value and heritage.

On the return phase we visited Adhikesavaperumal temple/ Sriperumpudur and Vallakotai Murugan temple. The day was useful and mind rested in peaceful satisfaction. 12 hours package will do.

Usually, the first few minutes of any interview are impacted by the face value of the profile, body language, bold attitude, communication and skill expertise. With negotiation for a win-win climax, the talks end there fruitfully.
But all is not well. When a potential candidate is hired on-board, he becomes an identity of the organisation wherever he represents it. If he is tainted, his personality is sure to have adverse effects on the brand image of the organisation. Today, every employer is keenly cautious to know more about the background of the new hire. They see to it that the potential hire does not have a murky past that was suppressed in the interview rounds. Any such record would hamper the business and pose a threat to long-term clients and employees.
Predominantly, we have heard of pre-employment checks and police verification done by government organisations. Going a step ahead is the criminal background check that is dutifully carried out in the US and elsewhere. No doubt, such practices are diligently followed by many MNCs in India. It is generally an unsaid trend to mention names of references that are known to the candidate. Imagine the magnitude of harmful hiring and negligence if we were to go by monotonous research of testimonials in the professional network groups. In strict faith, background checks are valuable and can eliminate future problems arising out of the hire. This process, if dutifully, followed would give good return on investment on the hired candidate.

Divine photo-2

Hope you have seen my earlier posting about the photo of Mahaperiyavar emerging in homam posted in Dec-2011 on this blog. Now read the following.

At the gruhapravesam function of my elder brother's house on 31-8-2014, gods emerged from homam. When I happened to click photos, the following divine personalities emerged from agni. So it is true that every time when the Aahudhi material is offered in the fire and mantra is recited, it is sure that gods, goddess, Indran, dhevas, rishis from the Siva/Vishnu lokam visit the spot to receive Aahudhi share from fire/smoke.

Sitting in front of the glowing agni we cannot easily figure out images. Even if recorded on video, it will be only a continuous glowing fire. People generally argue that many images will keep forming in fire just like watching figures in clouds. Here, it is purely a divine act that made me shoot at right moment. We are unsure as to what image would come and go in 1/20th of a second to match the shutter speed.

i) Ganesha : Standing, with perfect ears, long thumbikkai, visible hands and legs, vasthram partially visible in lighter tone
ii) Shiva : standing majestic, holding a thrisoolam with damaru attached to it. Looks like a snake coiled around the neck, Neelakantam clearly visible as dark spot at closeup. Ganga flowing down from his big jata mudi. Parvathi with flying hair, ornaments (vanki) on arms, is slowly emerging from below the left foot of Siva. Bairava is looking up from right bottom. Highly mesmerizing.
iii) Maha Vishnu : Standing tall, chakram on right hand, shangu on left.Vasthram and leg visible. Face not clear. Garudan in red color is seen behind his legs
iv) Shirdi Baba: Two wings emerge from the base, he is leaning to side with raised right hand, left hand stretched in front, begging bowl/bag hanging on right shoulder near waist. His full hand robe Kabni hanging up to his knee level.

We have not seen but only studied in the Hindu scriptures/shastra that devaloka personalities come and take Ahudhi from homam. This special miracle stands testimony to it. Feeling great to be their chosen lens man.

Preface to BOGAR-7000

Salutations!
I stand before thee as neither a learned Tamil scholar nor an enlightened spiritual figure nor a person of siddha cult who had ploughed and fathomed the depth of siddha literature. I am a Hindu with an average knowledge and basic skills.

When I attempted my first book Athisaya Siddhar BOGAR (Karpagam Publications), I had an opportunity to read the mammoth composition of seven thousand songs of Bogar called BOGAR 7000. Of course, reading it was a mega task. It happened so that a few years ago, the writing assignment was symbolically entrusted to me by Siddhar Bogar himself. As I did not possess sufficient writing experience or a fair knowledge then, I could not take over the specific task.

Never should you presume that I have achieved it in these years. Even to this day, I will not be able to say if I stand anywhere near to be qualified to write a thesis going by the strict yardstick prescribed for competency in Tamil language and grammar. I would rather say that it was purely a task initiated, entrusted and executed by him through me. All I understood is that he has put me on intensive training.

When several other works of siddhas are available in print, I did not know as to why I chose this particular work. Till that occasion, I never came across a lengthy work like this. I approached a local publisher who holds a track record of publishing all siddha works to know whether a detailed prose explanation is available for Bogar 7000. I received a negative reply that none had attempted to write notes for it.

As I was procrastinating, Bogar himself had triggered the impulse in me to start the work. I was totally blank and knew nothing as to how to start and finish. During such difficult times, he would show those songs that were just required to write chapter wise. This was how I authored my first book that captured accolades and compliments from readers. Frankly speaking, at that stage also, I did not go through the entire length of epic like Sapthakaandam except jotting down brief notes and song number. Since the songs have pseudo words in disguise with encrypted meaning, it was confusing and difficult to proceed ahead. It demanded reasonable research before I wielded the pen.

After studying the entire composition, I was totally surprised and spellbound. The topics like elixir, salts, herbs, alchemy and black magic are new to me. Inspite of zero knowledge on the topics, it struck me as to why I should not attempt to write an abridged explanation for sapthakaandam comprising thousands of verses. I believe the courage was seeded by none other than the siddhar. Would anyone dare to write a thesis on a subject that is totally new to his expertise? Perhaps you would ask why I took a heavy subject in depth without ground knowledge and which many scholars did not try in the past. I have no answer.

In future, somebody could possibly bring out a better version with excellence and nuance. Any way, this book would be a primitive forerunner. Going by publishing standards, though predominantly the vocabulary and language chosen for subjects on these lines have been bombastic, it was tough for a common man to understand. As a person who is against the barricades of language reach, I wanted a simple flow that will not shoo away enthusiastic readers.

A siddha mother living in Palani asked me to translate my work into English. I hesitated for the reason that this would need precision to convey the right meaning without distortion and at the same time understandable, without running for dictionary. It is my personal view that a prose work should not be a vehicle to boast one’s mastery over the language through high level vocabulary. The language style followed in many books on subjects of siddha and spirituality, address only the international native speakers of English. Even if the translation work was entrusted to some learned professors, I may not be sure whether they will understand and portray with ease the crux of what I conveyed in Tamil. Their emphasis would be more on language style and grammar than the essence. So, I decided to try it myself.

Though care has been taken, errors in interpretation and typography are expected in my classic debut in English. I beg the siddhar and readers to pardon it magnanimously. It is my soulful pleasure to dedicate the book at the holy feet of my guide, Siddhar Bogar.
