My friend, Siva

"See! I will not forget you. I have carved you on the palm of My hand. I have called you by your name. You are mine. You are precious to Me. I love you." :  Isaiah 49:16

In Sep 2010, I first met Siva as my colleague in a leading construction company where I worked as Head-HR. Since then, I have seen him growing in all spheres and now has a meaningful status in career, finance and society. Within a year, he received salary hike twice and a promotion, bought a car and registered a decent  house. He is deeply attached to me and said he preserves all my 'good night' SMS verses on his desktop. He believes a current is passing between us.

He was an atheist untill he met me, later, much of healthy transformation had taken place in aligning and cooking his mind and soul. His face has gained thejas and he is pulled towards the divine force. He is inclined towards spending free time in satsang and not gossip chats. He is fond of his parents and longs to care and give them the best comfort of living.

He truly observes and practices sarva jana sukhino bavantu (May all people be happy and live in peace). He is a mahaveera who has overcome and stood victorious against the urges of past habits and life style activities. He takes extra care of those who love him and move with humaneness. He has no envy on anyone or for anything. He is a person who would question the wrong doings of the other man. Induced by his elevated gnana, he has downsized his old friends circle that was detrimental and untrustable. He has never fumed on anybody's growth. Though physical appearance would expose him as a 'dhadha', he is as kind as a butterfly. There is no hype in my words, for I expect nothing that would need a praise from him.

His pattern changed considerably and I mapped all his attributes. They are: simplicity, overall maturity, intelligence, shouldering responsibilities, faith in god, patience, loving & affectionate, handling pressure, hard working, multi-tasking, easy going, teetotaller, intuitive, understanding, helpful, service minded, improved personality, work-life balance and management skills. He is steadfast in his goal, true to his conscience, decisive and persistent to succeed, no big aspirations or expectations and he takes life as it comes. It's my prophecy that he is going to be a crorepathi soon. If my impact on him been positive, I shall be happy.

Siva is such a wonderful human being who has no ego and worthy enough to be called a brother and friend. He is a complete man who is blessed with a caring wife and two lovely kids. Cheers to Siva!  I dedicate this page exclusively for him.

Just born
As fresh as the morning dew
that dangles on the blade,
Honey bees mistake them
for a smacking nectar.

The dispersed ray of light
through the natural water moleule
surpasses the beatiful 'Kohinoor'.

On that foggy winter dawn
the pure, cold, dazzling drops
rejuvenate the mind and body.

Mesmerizing herbal aroma
in gentle breeze of early shine,
Reminds us every morning
to make us feel 'just born'.

Letters between a student and teacher

Dr.P.Manickam,                                                                                                                    8.9.2008
Head, Department of English,
National College, Trichy.

Dear Sir,

Thank you so much for sparing your time and caring to speak with me. It was a wonderful conversation I had with you this morning. It has recharged me with bubbling enthusiasm to remain cheerful for the rest of the week.

It was during 1981- 83 that I studied in Gurunanak and you were my English teacher. I remember the style and methodology you adhered to while conducting classes. I can recall all that you taught us in poetry, prose, essay writing, grammar and the vivd narration you gave for the non-detailed prose 'A tale of two cities'. You taught us Nissim's 'Night of the Scorpion' for three days. From my experience, I am of the view that 'the art of teaching cannot be educated' even though one qualifies for a B.Ed degree. You are a class of your domain people and an ideal personality who can inculcate all traits in students. Never ever I had seen you sporting disarrayed, unkempt or un-gelled hair.

Of course, you may think now what is so special about you. I don't know about my class mates but you left a strong impact which is indelible in my mind. It is destiny that has shown my master after a gap of two decades. I admired you as a good teacher, photographer, motivator and methodist. You conducted well with fellow teachers also. I had seen you writing letters very often with interest. Now the trend is replaced by SMS / abbreviated email English.

Some names of my class mates are Balasubramani, Nedumaran, Kumar and a Manipuri boy Subhakumar. Some of the teachers who were your contemporaries include Mr.Ismail, Ms. Shantha Nair, Mr.Baljit Singh, Ms.Poongothai and others.  Every evening after school, I was fortunate enough to be accompanied by you, travelled by bus from Velachery and walked through the Jones Road to Saidapet Railway station together. I used to bombard you with a volley of questions enroute. You would then board a train for Kodambakkam and I took one to Chromepet. Now I hardly see a teacher-student duo brushing on the streets. Even if this continued, a teacher's social ego today would not permit him to go with a student.

Not all teachers enter into the positive memories of a student. I graduated in Physics from Gurunanak College, M.Sc from Annamalai University and later added a PG in Business Admin from Pondicherry University. Now I am heading the HR division of a BPO group of companies in Chennai. Since 2005, I have been a successful writer cum poet in Tamil and English. I do content writing, blogs, Tamil thodar on Self improvement, Time management etc. I contribute to English Travel magazines, The Hindu and some ezines. Since July 2008, I have restricted my writing for paucity of time because I have taken up private consultancy also.

Now when I look back at the reminiscences, my mind appears very fresh and energetic like the dew drops at dawn.

It’s so nice that your eldest son is with CISCO. To refresh your memories, I am attaching my photograph as you saw me in 1981. Also attached are some samples of my published articles in Tamil /English.  Interestingly, at college I was a student of Dr.M.Palanisamy (Gurunanak College) and I think he had retired from National College two years ago as Head-Physics Dept.

Please keep sending me mails and I am very happy that I have traced my beloved teacher after two plus decades. Based on my memories and narration, I think I did the umpiring and appraiser roles better as a student.

Convey my regards to one and all in your family. Please do send across your latest photograph for my album. Take care.

Regards,

S.Chandrasekar

Dear Chandru,

Thank you very much for your mail, photos, and articles. I have recognized you from your boyhood photo. I remember you were fair, lean, and calm, and you showed interest in talking to teachers. You were an intelligent and enthusiastic student, showing signs of learning and growing. Thank you Chandru for your loving words and remembrances.
The past is always happy and nostalgic. I am not computer savvy and I don’t read emails daily. Don’t mistake me. I congratulate you for your accomplishment as a writer and poet. I wish you good luck, excellent health and a HAPPY LIFE.
I am happy you have made it bigger with multi-faceted talents. You have been the only student who took effort to trace me and renew contact. I am due for retirement in 2012.
Please email your postal address too.  I feel comfortable to write letters than email.

Letters of suggestion to government

                                                                                                                May 24, 2010
Dr.  V. Irai Anbu, I.A.S.
Secretary,
Department of Tourism and Culture,
Government of Tamilnadu

Dear Sir,
Sub: Suggestions to improve tourism marketing
Warm greetings to you!
This afternoon I happened to see your interview on Doordarshan and wish to appreciate you for the efforts. At the same time, I wish to introduce myself as a Chennai based HR consultant, soft skills trainer and writer who has striking similarity with your wavelength. With postgraduate degree in Physics and Business Administration, I have put in 17 years of corporate experience. I associate with Ad media and other business houses in extending services in web content, brochures and write-ups.
As a contributing author, my papers have been published by the ICFAI University HRM Review journals.  I have written several cover stories and serials in Tamil on Personality development, Leadership skills and Entrepreneurship that where published in Tamil business monthlies. I was the creative writer for Travel & Shop-Chennai magazine from 2006-2008.
To say modestly, I have read some of your works too. To be specific, the novel Maram had resemblance to Narmada Bachao Andolan of Dr.Medha Patkar. Your spontaneity is simply superb.  Be a lecture on spiritualism or self improvement, you have carved a niche for yourself as a multi-faceted personality.
When Travel & Shop brought out a special issue in 2007 for TAAI event, I remember having written on many novel ideas in promoting and branding Tamilnadu Tourism. I found that something is lacking and we have to think out of the box. We have all antiques and heritage monuments but the way of stamping and presenting is not palatable. Why don’t we do something enticing? I am listing out some ideas. Please workout the feasibility from your point.
  1. Divide the tourists based on their interests. Take them to heritage and cultural places for a live demo of dance, art, sculpture, cooking, agricultural work, handicrafts, kolam, mat weaving, silk weaving, etc. This has to be a continuous session. Arrange for educated guides who are well versed in those domains to explain the nuances.
  2. Your hop on-off bus route is a hit. Similarly design tour package by helicopter to various places in Tamilnadu that demands aerial view to enjoy the beauty. This tour is common in Philippines.
  3. Let all barren and waste lands within the city limits and on the outskirts have a special marking for water body, parks, thick forest and soon migratory birds would arrive to populate.
  4. Take adventure tourism to old palaces. When I spoke with His Highness Mr.Babaji of Thanjavur, I suggested him that old tunnels be explored and revived to some extent and let there be a feel of royal adventure air inside. I told him he can entertain guests on regular basis for a fee to stay with him the whole day. Like this we have so many palace buildings and erstwhile princes are eager to this. You can plan for sightseeing on helicopter.
  5. Arrange for reforestation programme, allot few plains and let the tourists plant selective species of saplings, sow seeds, water them and enjoy. We strike a double purpose.
  6. Design few medical camps where ayurveda, sidhha physicians can teach them simple and quick remedy. A session on reading the pulse (naadi paritchai) is sure to be a hit. Let them do and take decoction, lehiyam, churnam for their own use.
  7. Have tie up with ASI. Let them volunteer for exploration for few days under supervisory team and get the joy of having unearthed the past on foreign soil. They will be thrilled to have the first hand knowledge of the treasure unearthed.
  8. Let them spend a day with tribal people, know their tradition, culture and discover India. This can be anywhere in Tamilnadu along the hill stations of Elagiri, Yercaud, Shevroy, Javvadhu, etc.
These are some ideas that I thought of and wanted to pass on to you. Thanks for sparing the time to read the letter with consideration. I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
Sincerely,
S.Chandrasekar

Ms.Mamata Banerjee
Hon'ble Minister for Railways
New Delhi

Dear Madam,

Season's Greetings to you.

I wish to introduce myself as S.Chandrasekar, an HR consultant from Chennai. I have great pleasure in giving you an idea which if tried would earn you high name and laurels for your management and planning. For a country with largest rail network in the world, my idea is not a dream.

I understand that Indian Railways operates more than 90,000 trains to transport 20 million passengers daily across various states in the country. By now it should have a stock of at least 50,000 coaches on wheels and some 2000 coaches lying abandoned or to be refurbished in the yard.

On an average 1500 passengers travel in a Passenger or Express train. It would be ideal to include an extra coach for 'Medical van'. This could accommodate two doctors/two nurses, 5-6 beds, refrigerator, drips etc. It should have first-aid kit, basic and important drugs considered vital for BP, Heart ailment, stomach disorders, Gastroenteritis; polio vaccine, milk powder, and child health medicines. There are many fresh medical graduates who are willing to offer services in the Railways department. An ambulance may be available at major stations.

When pantry is included why not a medical coach? Though passengers are health conscious and carry medicines, many a time they are unable to tackle heart attacks, breathlessness, vomiting, food poison and stomach upsets. Always the TTE cannot run down the complete passenger list for medical doctors on board.

You can implement from the New Year 2010 depending on the feasibility. I am sure this is not going to be a burden on the railway budget. I request you to work on this immediately and start implementing on major routes for feasibility study.

I don't demand brand new coach for this. Any refurbished old coach would serve the purpose. Please think over.

I am sure my detailed letter would arouse interest in you. Let's provide solution to the passengers to tackle the unexpected event. It will certainly give confidence to sick passengers to travel in peace.

Madam, I request you to be a Florence with a lamp.

Thanking you,

Yours truly,
S.Chandrasekar

Kodumudi Story Series-1

Krishnaveni
Krishnaveni is the eldest of the three children brought up by her widow mother at Kodumudi. The younger brother and sister were well looked after by her who did cooking and baby sitting at home. Their mother, the only bread winner of the family was too busy to look after them. Her full day ended up in the chores as servant maid to earn a few hundreds.

Thankfully the regime of the then chief minister Kamaraj that introduced noon meal scheme nurtured them and all students responded to the importance of education. Full attendance was reported in all the elementary schools in the Periyar district of Tamilnadu.

Krishnaveni with a pony tail and kempt hair was clad in green petticoat and the material she wore was terribly coarse. It produced the noise of a wet bed sheet when fluttered or walked in a hurry. Walking bare foot was a natural healthy was of living for the weakest economy. She often enjoyed the roadside scenery everyday while covering two miles to her school. With left over rice gruel for the next day’s breakfast, she was prompt and punctual enough to school. Back home she helped her mother in the dinner preparation and in cleaning vessels. Earthen ware was adjudged the best for the leftover cooked rice to be soaked in water overnight. Accompanying her brother and sister, she enjoyed going to school.

The London Mission School was the perfect place of wisdom where Pitchu vadhiyar was its headmaster. It was a time when Australian milk powder was introduced for supply to schools.

Pitchu was not only a man who was bound up in his work but also a good cook. All have seen him serving tasty food with affection at the noon meal scheme center. Through him the elementary school children had the warmth of home at school.

The District Education officer who made few appearances at school was the satisfied soul under the management of Pitchu. The village though looked somber otherwise, woke up to the alarm of rooster and the ringing of bell at the Makudeswarar temple for the usha-kaala puja.

Elders and ladies made it a compulsory daily dip at the Cauvery ghat. The early morning rays displayed the perfect laws of spectroscopy and optic connoisseur. The warmth of sunny rays splashing on one side and the cool wind from the agriculture lands laden with the strong smell of kernel drenched the other half of the body that gave a mesmerizing effect.

Krishnaveni added meager support to her mother by way of pruning and weeding jobs in the cultivated lands of the Pannaiyar or landlord. She waited restlessly for her education to get over so that she could vigorously jump into action with her mother.

The school was the epitome of knowledge, culture and values as Pitchu made it compulsory for all to qualify above elementary level. He personally visited the habitual absentee students and enquired their parents. Whenever she fell ill due to weakness and malnutrition, Dr. Arumugam treated her free of cost and also gave money. An expert doctor, he was celebrated as a living god by the needy. The affectionate bus driver Ramankutty Nair occasionally gave her free ticket on the Kodumudi-Kangeyam route. The total village was moved and tried to ease the plight of this poor girl.

Days rolled on and Krishnaveni struggled hard to reach SSLC. All the years her mind was inclined towards taking up a job and ultimately thought that an average pass out is sufficient. The electives never frightened her as science and history did. Her ears automatically shut her brains from concentrating at the spell of Panipat and Kalinga battles. Her chemistry of scientific reasoning hardly worked out to her expectations.

The D-day came with fan fare for the jubilant ones. Krishnaveni passed out successfully with a third class. She was thankful to her teacher-mentor Pitchu who took care to uplift her status. Falling at the feet of the noble teacher her mother wept in joy and praised him.

Though her mother wanted her to take up Teacher’s training, Krishnaveni was bent upon the fact that she cannot do justice as a competent teacher. Hence her choice was the postal service which was very dear to her. She had seen postman Duraisami carrying mail bundles across the village without tension.

She wondered how a postcard dropped inside a red box came out with a stamped face to reach the addressee. She had seen him reading out letters near the temple on the banks of the cauvery and down the paddy fields. It was those days when non-departmental candidates berthed a place in postal service backed up by the village headman. Since the mail traffic was low for that village, Duraisami covered the beat up to the limits of Unjalur. The district head post office at Erode dispatched very few articles, registration and Money order to Kodumudi.

Krishnaveni joined the postal department as sorting clerk. She liked the ways seal was affixed on letter with a bang. It reminded her of the way wheat flour was mixed, kneaded and beaten for Roti. The mails received from Burma and Ceylon came to a standstill and overseas mail was a rare scene. When Danushkodi was washed out in 1964, the inland mails from Rameswaram and Mannar completely stopped. The only option that came to rescue was the Morse code service for them.

Years rolled and Krishnaveni had the responsibility to marry off her younger sister. Her brother a studious young man enjoyed the college life at Kandar’s college, Vellore.

As a spinster Krishnaveni shouldered the family responsibility and balanced her life with focal approach. Having completed long innings in the career, Krishnaveni opted for a VRS and wanted to settle down in Kodumudi which transformed her and gave a meaning to her life. The award she received for distinguished service was a milestone in her life.

Whenever pal of gloom invaded her mind, she took solace under the comfort words of her fragile teacher, Pitchu. The octogenarian teacher who was in penury was so magnanimous in words and kindness. She had done the best she could for her family and enjoys a retired life with her brother and his family in Chennai. The cycle of responsibility has turned its wheel and she happily baby sits for his kids. With no other choice she had to do irrelevant jobs in the past when she was young and today it has become her passing time. What an irony!

For Krishnaveni, the village school teacher, river Cauvery, Makudeswara temple, post office and the Daak Seva award remains nostalgia for ever. Beyond postal beat, Morse code and pincode, into a world she travels loaded with memories of Kodumudi.

The One That Satisfies

‘Human Resources’- the magic words are murmured by everyone in one context or the other. All businesses around the world are continuously looking for better ways to recruit smart brains. Much has been said and written about the factors behind the HR factors. Many companies are considering some innovative ways to impart skills, train, re-train and motivate employees as they are the key issues. Why then in a country like India, recruitment melas are looked at as prestigious events while turnovers are more for every quarter in companies engaged in IT /ITES, Construction, Engineering, Manufacturing and the like.

‘The right man for the right job’ may be the HR mantra. On the lines of this saying, candidates are interviewed; the good or better among the brain pool is offered the letter. All is good for the first few months and slowly from somewhere a pungent smell of dissatisfaction spreads across the corporate floor. Where do the innings start?

The functioning style of management, the way projects are planned, in the impressive art of delegation of work, the manner in which constructive utility of manpower is exercised and the sense of job satisfaction blended with job security are the dependable factors for a lasting cordial relationship with the employer. The distaste initially starts with absenteeism, staying away from work without permission and the final renunciation of the bondage with one’s company result in an unhappy note. The recruitment team that relaxed for a while suddenly gets into feverish action and the team members stop not till the goal is achieved. On an average, an employee with rich experience in India or abroad also shows low enthusiasm and the heat is on the down beat.

As India is emerging successful in the global arena, it has been an improvement on the economical status of an individual – billing wise or growth wise. Many strategies were evolved over a period of 8 – 10 years but it has been not easy to analyze the psychological changes and attitude of an employee on the long run. We could call this run to span a few months as is the trend. A serious look has to be given to leverage the human capital and support them more effectively. Bucket with a hole or filling the overhead tank with taps open is not a healthy trend. This effect will drastically lead to saturation level of enthusiasm in Recruiters as well. How good is our Indian HR system? It is high time that the delivery model needs a revamp..

Ninety percent of the HR activities end up in the routine chores of paper, interviews, reference checks, hiring, payroll and firing letters. As this swallows the maximum time, HR professionals have little or no time to concentrate on other strategies or find time to keep abreast of the latest trends in HR. Hence soon they get stamped as ‘obsolete’. ‘On-line integrated management’ is a better remedy as it involves transparency, cost effective and paperless atmosphere. If this system which is in operation in some corporates is put to use in all the organizations in India, a quicker coordination would be achieved between employees, heads, departments and organizations.

Through online integrated management and clear coordination between HR and other divisions much of unsaid troubles could be mitigated. Now our HR professionals can foresee a progressive future in redefining HR intelligence. Here lay the analysis to identify explorable skills in existing employees and to deploy them in the appropriate positions for which they have been hired. This is the prescription for cost cuts, to boost performers, motivate and retain them. Whatever be the advancement, the so called human factors still remain a mystery and cannot be gauged through any profiling tests. The ‘sukshuma’ behind the understanding of the human psychology is still a puzzle. The HR professionals also fall in this category without exemption. They travel miles to set the ball rolling as long as they find it interesting.

The mentality of the quitting employees happens to be contagious that they (HR) themselves are caught in the quick sand but appreciably resist from falling sick and emerge like a ‘phoenix’. Recruiters can only supply manpower and the satisfaction that a new employee derives in his work purely rests in the hands of his or her Group mentor.

Changing jobs like hat

In every company HR builds up a healthy atmosphere but cannot always detect and eradicate the latent politics which are the ubiquitous characteristics of human beings. Are we heading in the right way? Being proactive in salary and compensation alone is not the solution to employee turnover but there is something else beyond. What is there behind the industry trends of boom – bubble –crash – survival –recovery – growth map? Perhaps it is the human satisfaction that matters.

“When I stand before thee at the day's end, thou shalt see my scars and know that I had my wounds and also my healing – Rabindranath Tagore”

( Poem covers all the panchabootha sthalas )

(Chidambaram)

(Thiruvaanaika)

(Thiruvannamalai)

(Thiruvaroor)

(Kalahasthi)
